Laboratory building in Basel

Transparency in creative form combined with modernity and technical progress were the requirements of a global pharmaceutical corporation for its new laboratory building. Following these specifications, the Japanese architect Tadao Ando created a structure with an inte- grated glass façade, Daldrop + Dr.Ing.Huber fitted the technical equipment in perfect balance to this in the building.

Between 2009 and 2010 state-of-the-art laboratories were set up on six floors of the thirteen-storey building. The architectural office of Buckhardt and Partners in Basel was responsible for the con- struction management of the project, planning of the air-condition- ing and ventilation systems was headed by the planning group M+M AG in Böblingen.

Our company planned and installed approx. 4000 m² of laboratory ceilings and 3800 m² laboratory walls in this building. The multi- functional wall system which can be equally used in all areas of the building was planned specifically for the demands of the phar- maceutical manufacturer. Also the modular elements of the walls and ceilings mean they can be changed at any time without any damage being caused.

The optical transparency of the laboratory walls created by the glass offer an ideal working environment for employees. The glass walls can be darkened with a red screen or roller blinds with the help of touch panels operated by service personnel. On the south side of the building large outside blinds have been fitt- ed which can be adjusted according to the weather, time of day and sunshine.

According to the pharmaceutical manufacturer's order, particular attention had to be paid to the sound insulation between the individual work areas. In close cooperation with acousticians, glass thicknesses and materials were selected for the double-skin walls guaranteeing up to 55 dB insulation.

The air conditioning systems for the building installed by Daldrop + Dr.Ing.Huber are divided into two independent cycles guaranteeing hygienic conditions in all areas of the building. Each room has its own pressure regulation which can fulfil the various air conditioning requirements within the building. The exhaust air is filtered against odour and after heat recovery is fed directly outside.

Apart from the ventilation systems, our company designed and built the sliding doors to the clean- rooms and a large part of the furnishings and equipment for the laboratory area in this building.

Within 2 years, with Daldrop + Dr.Ing.Huber's support, a pharmaceutical building has been erected with state-of-the-art architectural design and innovative technology serving future-oriented research and development.
